Ok so I don’t really agree with remakes that often, but when it comes to Channing Tatum as a topless hunky merman, then hell yes I’m all over it. It’s another role reversal movie, but girls come on … Channing Tatum!
The original film follows a young man (played by Tom Hanks) who reunites with a mermaid (Daryl Hannah) who saved him from drowning when he was a young boy. He falls head over heels in love with her without knowing who or what she was. In this version, Tatum will actually play the mermaid, or should I say merman, who saves Bell as a young girl only to reunite with her years later.
This classic 1984 romantic comedy marked the first major hit for Grazer and Howard, and essentially led to the launch of their Imagine Entertainment. Grazer and Howard will return to produce this remake along with Free Association’s Tatum, Reid Carolin, and Peter Kieran. Imagine’s Anna Culp will be the executive producer.
I honestly think this movie could work really well as a role reversal, and not just because of Tatum’s hot body. Who says only girls can have a fishy tail and swim around in the sea, right? Personally I think this one could easily be a big box office smash. Especially where teenage girls are concerned.
I will have to keep my eyes peeled on this one and will be sure to report any updates about the production.
