The new Pokemon GO Plus is a neat little option for hardcore Pokemon GO fans. It is, at its heart, a pedometer for the game of the same name. You wear it, walk and it tracks your steps. Great. Initially advertised as an accessory to help catch the little sneaky digital creatures, there is more to this than meets the eye (or the marketing team is telling us about). While wearing the Pokemon GO Plus you can get alerts, via vibration, that a digital creature is nearby and within range of being captured. Now, rather than forcing you to take out your phone, you can just push a button on the Plus and it will attempt to capture that creature. If you want to know what type of Pokemon it is you will still have to take your Android or iPhone out of your pocket. Surely the next iteration of the Plus will feature a screen of some sort, and cost more than a decent pair of Levi blue jeans. What about the features that the marketing team have left out of the ad copy though? Let’s discuss those things after the jump.
2 Things the Pokemon GO Plus does but are not advertised:
- Track egg hatching steps or buddy walking distance
This is a combo item that is not listed as something the Pokemon GO Plus does but it apparently does. For those that do not know, the buddy system requires you to walk to level up certain digital creatures you choose. The same requirement is in place for egg hatching- could be a rare Pokemon, or could be a common one and you won’t know till you walk the distance required to hatch it. Want to beef up that Charizard or Bulbasour? Better get to hoofing it.
- Track distance
This is directly connected to the perk in the #1 spot there. The device is not advertised as being able to track distance walked but apparently does. For many gamers this is an amazing perk and is awesome. This basically leaves the GPS on in the background of your phone when it is locked.
