Overhead shooting titles are not as popular as they used to be. During the 16-bit era you could hardly shake a stick without hitting a scrolling shooter of some kind (the other was side scrolling). From Aleste titles (Space Megaforce, M.U.S.H.A. etc) to Raiden and others- those were the good old days. Sure, scrolling shooters are somewhat popular on mobile platforms but not so much on consoles. Infinite Dreams is working to fix that, at least on the Playstation platforms (3, 4 and Vita). For those that don’t know what Sky Force is, continue reading. Everyone else, prepare yourselves, one of the best overhead scrolling shooters is coming. Hone your skills now.
Sky Force Anniversary is an updated version of the original (check out my review of the Android version over on ). Graphically, Sky Force is a tour de force that harkens back to the classics. The challenge level is just right, not so tough that you throw your controller but not so easy that you blast through it in an afternoon.
My first exposure to Sky Force was on an old HP iPaq PDA that was running Windows Mobile. It was amazing back then and it is still amazing today. The graphical engine has tons of 2.5D scrolling (remember the line scrolls on the floors of Street Fighter 2?). Even back then on, what I thought was, underpowered hardware, Sky Force was able to kick butt. On Android it is no different and with the Playstation 3, 4 and PS Vita edition, I can only expect it to be just as good. The track record that Infinite Dreams have has been perfect so far.
