Usually, I start reviews with a bit of the back story of the game but Tap ‘n’ Slash has no backstory. Take this in a good way- who remembers the backstory of, say, Doom? Who cared? Tap ‘n’ Slash is one of those types of games that doesn’t really need a backstory as everything is pretty self-explanatory. There are enemies in a dungeon full of loot and you are controlling the hero. What else do you need to know? I know, you may be thinking this is going to suck. Read on and find out why this is not the case.
First, in Tap ‘n’ Slash you are not going to just run roughshod on the enemies. Get that out of your head right now. It is not going to happen. Why? Because you are limited in a very unique way. Each time you start out in the dungeon you are given a few swords. Each time you encounter an enemy you use one sword to kill them – no matter how big they are or if they are a boss or regular monster.
As you progress through the various dungeons you will come upon treasure chests. These will give you a few gems and some experience points. Also found in the dungeons will be additional swords- I would suggest grabbing these at any cost.
Those are the basics of Tap ‘n’ Slash. Now for the really fun part, or for some the really annoying part. You are only moving diagonally like you did in Q*Bert. You are also only able to move forward in the dungeon- no backtracking. Yep, if you miss that sword or treasure chest you are out of luck- you are not getting it. Encounter an enemy without a shield or sword and you will meet an untimely demise.
The challenge level of Tap ‘n’ Slash is just about right- when you die it is probably due to poor planning on your part. Roleplaying fans will want to give this one a try- it has that endless runner feel but without the annoying elements of the genre.
