When you think of real time strategy games today, you probably think of mobile games like Clash of Clans. For retrogaming fans, though, real time strategy games probably started and ended with one franchise: Command & Conquer. One of the creators of that seminal game is back with a new game called War Commander: Rogue Assault. It is a freemium game, but it does things slightly differently and that is great news for real time strategy fans.
First of all, War Commander: Rogue Assault is not like Clash of Clans and the hundreds of clones it has spawned. You are in direct control of your troops, if you so choose, or you can hand off the nitty gritty war stuff to the artificial intelligence (let the computer handle it, like in Clash of Clans). That is one of the big differences here. It is also one of the major gripes I have with “real time strategy” games on mobile. You are not in control of your troops, so there is very little actual strategy to be had. Battles in games like Clash of Clans become less strategy and more “I have more, bigger, troops than you so I will inevitably win.” Not so in War Commander: Rogue Assault.
I mentioned already that this is a freemium title. There are In-App Purchases (IAP) to be concerned with, but they are also handled differently compared to other mobile games. For the most part, your resources are obtainable without timers and other “incentives” to spend real world money on. It will take time to acquire things if you are a free player, but that is the nature of the beast.
