Review – Super Phantom Cat Android 2D Platformer

Ah, I complain a lot about the lack of 2D platformers being released today but I am not scared to speak up when one hits.  Super Phantom Cat is exactly that- a 2D platformer for Android devices (it is also on iPhone).  If you are like me and miss the good old days of 2D side scrolling platformers then Super Phantom Cat will definitely pull those nostalgia strings.

As you play through Super Phantom Cat you are able to get new characters by collecting the data to unlock them.  This data is basically coins in any Super Mario game or rings in a Sonic the Hedgehog title.  The difference is, collecting everything possible in Super Phantom Cat has an actual impact on your game- other than a higher score.  So far, I have unlocked a handful of characters other than the white cat one that you start the game with.

The gameplay is spot on and everything has a detailed look while keeping well within the “pixel” art world that is still raging on.  There are a few quirks with the game recognizing the controls on my GPD XD from time to time but after remapping the controls it is fine.  That reminds me, Super Phantom Cat automatically recognizes your GDP XD has hardware controls available and maps them accordingly.

Android Super Phantom Cat

There is a certain charm to Super Phantom Cat that I cannot put my finger on.  It is quite child friendly- no swearing or anything overly difficult early on.  Taking a cue from the classics, Super Phantom Cat looks cutesy but those graphics hide a progressive challenge that is hard to turn away from.

GDP XD Specifics: From the get go Super Phantom Cat recognized the hardware controls and mapped them for me.  There were a few times that I had to remap the controls because after dropping out and coming back (setting up screen capture or answering message alerts) something got messed up.  The widescreen aspect of the GDP XD makes this game look amazing.
