Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD Edition Now Available on Google Play for NVIDIA Shield Devices

Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of LIberty

This is an interesting release from Konami for a couple of reasons. Konami is often prolific at keeping their major titles, anything with Metal and Gear or Solid in the title, available for various platforms and new releases. If you act quickly you can grab Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD Edition on the NVIDIA Shield for 50% off the suggested retail price.

For a limited time, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD Edition will be available for $9.99 (regular price is going to be about $20). This is a decent price for fans of Metal Gear Solid 2 as this is going to be the best-looking version available until more powerful hardware receives a version (presumably at a higher resolution too). The NVIDIA Shield version runs at 60 frames per second but only at 720p so “HD Edition” may mean different things to different gamers. Some cannot live with anything less than 1080 so take the news of this release with a grain of salt. The game runs smoothly though so there is that going for it.

Would you rather have a lower frame rate, but higher resolution?

Another reason that Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is an interesting release is because it is the only Metal Gear Solid game on the NVIDIA Shield. For some reason, none of the other games have been ported to the NVIDIA platform. Also, Sons of Liberty is not available in “HD” for PC either. Surely when Konami releases the PC version MGS 2 will have higher resolution graphics and possibly even better frame rates. We will have to wait to find out about that. For now, we have the NVIDIA Shield edition to discuss.

Fans of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty are going to be right at home with this NVIDIA Shield port. It does include the VR missions so there is additional content to kick around.

Interestingly, Konami has at least mentioned elsewhere that one more Metal Gear Solid game will be coming to the NVIDIA Shield. Just not when. Over on Gamespot Konami has mentioned that we can expect Metal Gear Solid 3 HD Edition at some point in the future. Rather nebulous of them to leave fans hanging like this but it makes sense.

If you want to see more Metal Gear Solid games, or games of this quality, on the NVIDIA Shield then support companies giving you these games now. If companies know they can make money on a platform they will come and they will mimic popular releases by other publishers. If fans support the good releases then all gamers win.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD Edition is available on Google Play.
