Giant monster flicks used to be huge, no pun intended, but for some reason fell off the map for new movies. Sure, the more recent Godzilla movie was not received all that well by North America movie fans, which for some reason shut the door on a lot of giant monster movies. We go Pacific Rim which I believe did alright but not well enough to push the genre to the forefront again. Now, Shin Godzilla, also known as Godzilla Resurgence, is making moves to debut in theaters on October 11th in a limited theater release for one week.
Before you get all happy and jumping up and down, please realize that Shin Godzilla will be playing with Japanese audio and English subtitles. I want to warn you beforehand because a lot of our readers prefer dubbed if possible and only sometimes is subtitles okay. With that out of the way, let’s discuss Godzilla Resurgence a bit.
First, Godzilla Resurgence is directed by Attack on Titan’s Shinji Higuchi and Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Hideaki Anno. The script was penned by Anno and stars Satomi Ishihara, Hiroki Hasegawa and Yutaka Takenouchi. Basically, the people behind the most iconic giant monster entertainment of the last 15+ years have put in time on this movie. That lends a level of credibility to this new release in the franchise. It remains to be seen if fans will agree or not.
From what I can gather from the trailer we are in for a basic reboot setup for more movies. That is fine with me as I have been a fan of the Godzilla series for years and have watched many of them on Crackle for free- legally. You are either a fan of giant monster movies or you are not, there is no real middle ground with this genre.
Godzilla Resurgence hits theaters on October 11th in select towns in the United States.
