Shelton Benjamin Returning on Smackdown Live

If you were a fan of WWE back in the early 2000’s then you probably remember Shelton Benjamin.  He had a good 10 year or so run in the WWE, first as part of the World’s Greatest Tag Team with Charlie Haas as part of “Team Angle”.  Kurt Angle was the leader/mentor of this faction hence the name.  Shelton Benjamin would also go on to have a rather interesting singles career.  Now, he is returning to Smackdown Live, which was where he debuted in 2003 ironically.

Shelton Benjamin was one of the young superstars that was created after the purchase of rival World Championship Wrestling.  His career spanned many years and featured runs with both the WWE Tag Team Championship and Intercontinental Championship belts.  The Intercontinental Championship being the highest belt that Shelton Benjamin was able to acquire during his run in WWE as a singles competitor.

Shelton Benjamin went through a lot in his career with WWE.  A lot of people feel that he simply was in the wrong place at the wrong time.  During his tenure we saw the rise of Brock Lesnar, John Cena and the revival/death of ECW as WWE was working to find a new audience in the post WCW years (when a lot of fans simply quit caring).

If you are not aware of Shelton Benjamin then you are seriously missing out on one of the best “home grown” WWE superstars.  I say that due to the fact that he was not a former World Championship Wrestling performer and held no major titles in any promotions prior to his WWE tenure.

Check out his ladder matches at Wrestlemania XIX (tag team) and then at Wrestlemana 22 (singles).  He also had a very cool feud with Triple H and an awesome tag match with Shawn Michaels.  Generally speaking, Shelton Benjamin was one of the highlights of WWE during the mid to late 2000’s.

What is your favorite Shelton Benjamin match?
