The Secret Life of Pets is an upcoming movie that plays on the love most of us have for our pets. It gives them some human traits (speaking and more complex actions) and builds on the suspicion of pet owners that something is going on when unattended. Pets Unleashed ties into the movie by using some characters and mixes in some Candy Crush Saga and Bejeweled style Match 3 puzzle gaming.
Yep. Pets Unleashed is taking the route that other family friendly movies turned mobile games are taking. If you are not a fan of Bejeweled, or Candy Crush Saga more specifically, then you are probably going to not like this game. The tie-in with the movie is in the use of characters from the movie. So far, I have found Leonard (my favorite), Gidget and Max.
Don’t give me that face, I tried my best.
The setup for Pets Unleashed is similar to that of Candy Crush Saga- you are on a linear path, here it is through a park and other cityscapes, and you can look ahead to see upcoming challenges. You cannot skip levels till you beat them so get ready for plenty of “pay for 5 more moves” type situations to pop up. It is the nature of free to play games- publishers have to monetize somehow. I was stuck on level 22, 24 and 27 for several days each, exhausting all of my lives. I did not pay for more moves (it is against our review policy) so I had to just replay, and replay, the levels till I got lucky and passed them.
The animations of the pets at the top of the screen are cute but as with most things like this, they get old the 100th time you see them. Max in particular has an animation that will pull at your heart strings to go ahead and hit that buy button upon losing.
If you are a fan of match 3 games like Candy Crush Saga and want something with a modern tie-in then grab Pets Unleashed. It is a fun game if taken in moderation and EA helps with that by limiting your lives to five at a time. Just be warned there are In App Purcahses.
