Today cable cutters are more popular than ever before. This is probably due to the fact that high speed Internet is reaching more people than ever before. Couple that with the fact that people are sick of paying for channels they don’t watch, or worse – don’t want. Add in the fact that a lot of cable channels will edit the shows for time, content and just to generally be a jerk about things. Ever notice the voices being off in your favorite re-runs? That is a trick channels use to get one more advertisement into the time block available- they speed the video up just a tiny bit. This gives them another 30 seconds or so over a half hour program. These tactics suck and nearly all cable channels do them. That is why we are looking at 5 free streaming services worth your money instead of cable.
Crackle is awesome. They are owned by Sony Entertainment and have over 20 content partners to bring 100% free content to viewers. There are advertisements in the content but don’t worry, they are not nearly as bad as cable channels that you are paying $50+ per month to watch. Crackle has some exclusives worth watching for nearly everyone. For me, I like the fact that they have Robotech available. You may like Joe Dirt 1 and 2 (part two was released on the streaming service first, for free). Like court room drama then check out the exclusive Sequestered series. Sports Jeopardy, Dead Rising: Endgame, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee and more are exclusive to Crackle’s service. Since the cost is nothing more than the cost of high speed Internet you are already paying for this is a great service to have on hand. I forgot to mention the tons of movies and television shows they have on hand to, just check them out. They are more than worth your time.
Weird to see a cable channel on here? Well, it is okay to be surprised. Not all of the content they air is available for free but a large enough chunk is to warrant them on this list. A lot of the shows that air on ABC are available such as Modern Family and Fresh off the Boat for instance. You won’t be able to watch ALL of the episodes for free, you are limited to the last three to five episodes of the current season. Still, for the money, it cannot be beat. Watch Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, The Bachelorette, Scandal and many more.
Yes, even Youtube gets a place on this list. If you don’t pay for Youtube Red then you get ads but it is free. Why is it on this list? Because there is a ton of content, either with permission or not, from a lot of providers. The reason it is making this list in particular is Youtube is a great way to catch up with, remind yourself of, etc shows you may have missed. There are tons of compilation videos for various shows available to help new comers catch up to the current season of shows. There are also tons of movies that are 100% legally free too though.
Another cable television provider listing. Why? Well, Flash, Arrow, Jane the Virgin, Supernatural, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and the upcoming second season of Supergirl are all good reasons. Plus, you can watch the entire series of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles for some Summer Glau fun. Did I forget to mention there are a couple of Justice League animation specials available too?
A lot of people don’t realize that the Internet Archive offers a plethora of older programming. Sure, you are not going to see the latest Terminator or Jurassic Park movie on here but you will see some classics- depending on your definition of the word. For instance, His Girl Friday and Night of the Living Dead and Plan 9 From Outer Space are available here.
