Q*Bert is a retro gaming classic that has stood the test of time. It is also one of the few classics that is hardly remembered when it comes to remakes and homages. That is just plain sad. At least Bulkypix remembers Q*Bert, as evidenced by their upcoming title, Mars Mountain, now available for Android.
Endless running games are a mobile staple. Mixing that genre with a classic like Q*Bert seems like it is a no brainer. While Q*Bert had you jumping to change tiles to a certain color, Mars Mountain has you jumping down the mountain but now collecting items. These items are needed to repair your crashed space ship and get off the planet.
As with most endless running games there is, obviously, no end to Mars Mountain. The challenge comes in the layouts, the enemies that need avoiding and general hazards that litter the land.
I’ve covered Q*Bert style games here on Gravis Ludus and our other site, Retro Gaming Magazine, and Mars Mountain looks just as good. Graphically Mars Mountain looks like a pixel, sprite, based action game that certainly will fit in well with the current style of “retro” inspired games.
There are In App Purchases in Mars Mountain so be wary of those if you are planning on letting the younger players get in on the action.
