By now it is no secret that Netflix is relaunching the 80’s classic cartoon- Voltron. Specifically they are calling it Voltron: Legendary Defender. From the 30 second, or so, long commercial that Netflix has released, we can see that this is not going to be a wild take like Voltron Force was (okay, no more mentioning that). Instead, this Netflix take on the classic is appearing to be hand drawn, at least not obviously rendered by computers. There does seem to be something “off” though, something almost too hard to put my finger on.
First, this is a relaunch that is similar to a reboot for the series. We can expect to see Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro as the main cast. King Zarkon will reprise his role as the evil alien force leader that is hell bent on destroying Arus and other planets. This is all pretty similar to the original Voltron cartoon and A WAYS away from that other “relaunch” that I am not talking about anymore.
The Executive Producer for this reboot is Jaoquim Dos Santos who is well known for Legend of Korra and Avatar. This could be great news depending on your point of view on Korra and Avatar. Personally I am willing to give this reboot a try, especially considering Netflix will be releasing all of the episodes for season one on June 10th.
What is “off” about Voltron Legendary Defender? It appears to be more “Robotech” than it does Voltron. I am not saying that this is a problem as Robotech is a great classic too (and deserves a reboot too). Just the original Voltron had a certain style to it that other cartoons of the time didn’t have. The characters in this reboot appear to be more at home within the Robotech universe. The uniforms and clothing shown so far just appears more in line with the Invid Invasion storyline from Robotech. Maybe this is a sign for a later crossover? It has happened in the comics, why can’t it happen in the cartoons? Netflix has the clout to make it happen.
What are your thoughts on the Voltron Legendary Defender pics and trailer?
