Must See Movies of 2016


As the success of Star Wars the Force Awakens, rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars across the globe, will its momentum signal a turnaround for the cinema industry in 2016? Movie companies are looking to make 2016 a very profitable year with some eagerly awaited titles.



Biggest of the big name movie heavyweights due for release is Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Action / adventure / fantasy, from Warner Bros Studios.

Directed by Zack Snyder.  Starring Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne / Batman), Henry Cavill (Clark Kent / Superman) and  Gal Gadot (Diana Prince / Wonder Woman).

The plot show cases Batman taking on Superman while Lex Luthor is up to his old tricks of taking over the world, this time with an evil character so formidable it will require Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to defeat it.  World wide release date, March 23/24, 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse.  Action / adventure / fantasy, from 20th Century Fox.  Directed by Bryan Singer.  Starring, Oscar Isaac (Apocalypse), Jennifer Lawrence (Raven / Mystique) and Michael Fassbender (Magneto).

Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant of Marvel’s X-Men is out to reek havoc upon the world by teaming up with Magneto and other X-men, he sets out to cleanse mankind and create a new world order.  Raven leads an alliance team of X-Men to stop Apocalypse destroying the earth.  World wide release from May 2016, USA release date May 27th, 2016.

Deadpool.  Action / adventure / sc fi, from 20th Century Fox.  Directed by Tim Miller.  Starring, Morena Baccarin (Vanessa Carlysle / Copycat), Gina Carano (Angel Dust) and Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson / Deadpool).

Based upon Marvel Comics most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL.  It is the story of Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative, becomes a mercenary, after he was subjected to a rogue experiment leaving him with accelerated healing powers.  He adopts the quirky alter ego of Deadpool and sets out to find the man who nearly destroyed his life.  World wide release from the 4th February, release date in the USA, 12 February, 2016.

Suicide Squad.  Action, from Warner Bros.  Director, David Ayer.  Starring, Margot Robbie (Dr. Harleen F. Quinzel / Harley Quinn), WilL Smith (Deadshot) and Jared Leto (the Joker).

A group of super villains are head hunted by a secret government agency, A.R.G.U.S, which labels the group, the “Suicide Squad”.  In exchange for shorter prison sentences they are required to undertake the most dangerous missions.  World wide release from the 3rd August 2016, USA release date 5th, August, 2016.

Star Trek: Beyond.  Action / adventure / sci fi / fantasy, from Paramount pictures.  Director, Justin Lin.  Starring, Simon Pegg (Scotty), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Idris Elba (Krall) and Cris Pine (Kirk).

It is believed the plot surrounds exploring the final frontier better know to trekky fans as the five-year mission.  The USS Enterprise crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), come under attack from unknown hostile aliens, who destroy the Enterprise, leaving them stranded on a new planet.  World wide release dates from July, 2016.  USA release date 22nd July,2016.

The Jungle Book.  Adventure / drama / fantasy, from Disney pictures.  Directed by Jon Favreau.  Starring, Lupita Nyong’o (voice of Raksha) , Scarlett Johansson (voice of Kaa) , Idris Elba (voice of Shere Khan) and Neel Sethi (Mowgli).

A 3D, CGI, live-animation adventure fantasy remake of the 1967 animated film of the same name.  It follows the story of, Mowgli (Neel Sethi).  A young boy, raised by Indian wolves Raksha (Lupita Nyong’o) and Akela (Giancarlo Esposito), who sets out on a journey of self discovery and encounters many life threatening challenges from the jungle creatures he encounters.  World wide release from 7th April, 2016.  USA release from 15th April, 2016.

Independence Day: Resurgence.  Action / sci fi / fantasy, from 20th Century Fox.  Directed by Roland Emmerich (Executive Producer of Original Independence Day).  Starring, Joey King (SAM), Liam Hemsworth (Jake Morrison) and Maika Monroe (Patricia Whitmore).

Two decades have past, since the original, world wide blockbuster of Independence Day hit movie screens.  Noted for its breathtakingly devastating explosions, will we see the same approach with groundbreaking filming in the upcoming sequel ?  Having recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth collaborate to put together an immense defense program for protecting the planet of any future alien attacks.  Those aliens have even more advanced weapons than before but will the innovation and intellect of a few humans be able to save the world again?  Worldwide release from 22nd June, 2016.  USA release date, 24th June, 2016.

Assassins Creed.  Action / adventure, from 20th Century Fox.   Directed by Justin Kurzel.  Starring, Michael Fassbender (Callum Lynch / Aguilar), Marion Cotillard (as the daughter of Alan Rikkin) and Brendan Gleeson (Callum Lynch’s father).

Based on the award-winning video game series of the same name, which was first released on various gaming platforms in 2007.

Michael Fassbender plays Aguilar, a 15th century Spanish Assassin, and his present day descendant Callum Lynch.  Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.  World wide release date 21st, December, 2016.

Warcraft.  An action / adventure / fantasy, from Universal Pictures.  Directed by Duncan Jones.  Starring, Travis Fimmel (Anduin Lothar), Paula Patton (Garona) and Robert Kazinsky (Orgrim).

Based on the hugely popular Warcraft video game and book series.  It is the story of Orcs and humans battling to survive.  With the Orcs home world dying, they search for another, invading the peaceful realm of Azeroth, habitated by humans.

Heroes on both sides of the war will attempt to avoid conflict despite the fact that their enemies leave them no choice.  World wide release from 25th May, 2016.  USA from 10th June,2016.

Angry Birds, from Sony pictures.  Directed by Clay Kaytis.  Staring, Peter Dinklage (voice of Mighty Eagle), Ike Barinholtz (voice of Blues), Bill Hader (voice of Leonard) and Jason Sudeikis (voice of Red).

A, 3D computer-animated comedy film based on Finnish computer game developer Rovio Entertainment’s world wide video gaming phenomenon of 2009 – Angry Birds.

Set in an unspoilt paradise, known as Bird Island.  It is a bird sanctuary full of diverse personalities, colors, shapes and sizes, where most of the birds get along except Red.  The lead of the film, looses his temper regularly and finds himself confined to anger management courses.

There’s also  Chuck.  Another of the angry birds, who moves fast and talks fast.  Then there’s Bomb, living in a bomb shelter because he frequently blows up due to having IED disorder (Intermittent Explosions Disorder).  Some green pigs come along and crash Bird Island to have a party.  They become friends with the birds, but RED doesn’t trust the pigs.  World wide release from 11th May, 2016.  USA release date from 20th May, 2016.

Zoolander 2.  Comedy, from Paramount Pictures.  Directed by Ben Stiller.  Starring, Macaulay Culkin (as himself),  Will Ferrell (Mugatu), Kristen Wiig (Alexanya Atoz), Owen Wilson (Hansel) and Ben Stiller (Derek Zoolander).

Models Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel (Owen Wilson) must stop a conspiracy to kill the world’s most beautiful people.  World wide release date from 10th February.  USA 12th, February.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant, Adventure / Sci Fi, from Red Wagon entertainment.  Director, Robert Schwentke, starring, Shailene Woodley (Tris), Theo James (Four) and Miles Teller (Peter).

Leaving the only family known to them, to search for a peaceful solution for their crisis riddled city, Tris and Four escape beyond the wall around Chicago.  Outside the wall Tris and Four find themselves in the middle of a ruthless battle threatening to wipe out humanity.  To survive, Tris has no one to trust and must make seemingly impossible choices of courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love.  World wide release date from 9th March, 2016.  USA release date 18th March, 2016.
